Mengutip CNN, Selasa (2/5/2023) First Republic Bank telah disita oleh Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation dan langsung diambil alih oleh JPMorgan Chase. First Republic menjadi pemberi pinjaman AS ketiga yang gagal bayar dan bangkrut selama dua bulan belakangan.
Lantas mengapa First Republic mengalami kebangkrutan?
Menurut pengamat, First Republic dan SVB bank dengan tipe sama, mereka mengandalkan nasabah kaya raya yang memiliki saldo kas besar baik individu maupun bisnis. Tetapi hal itulah yang menjadi malapetaka saat pasar bergejolak.
“Para deposan ini sangat rentan terhadap pemicu. Mereka canggih, mereka tahu bahwa mereka memiliki pilihan lain, dan mereka memiliki mekanisme untuk memindahkan uang dengan cepat,” kata Patricia McCoy, seorang profesor hukum di Boston College, mengatakan kepada CNN bulan lalu.
Kabangkrutan First Republic dibuktikan saat bank tengah melaporkan kinerja keuangan pada kuartal I 2023. Mereka mengungkap bank telah kehilangan 40% simpanan atau sekitar US$ 100 miliar.
Apalagi sekitar dua pertiga dari simpanan di First Republic tidak diasuransikan. Meskipun porsinya lebih sedikit dibandingkan simpanan di SVB yang tidak diasuransikan sebesar 94%.
